What Causes Coolant Leaks

There is an important system called the cooling system under the hood of every car. A bunch of tubes, fans, pumps, and fluid make it up. This liquid, called coolant, is very important because it moves heat from the engine to the air, keeping it from getting too hot and breaking down. Continue reading to find out more.

What Causes Coolant Leaks

How To Know That Your Coolant Is Leaking

  • Pooling of Coolant: Coolant pooling underneath your car is a very clear sign. Coolant comes in many colors. It may look a dirty color after being in your car for a while because of dirt and grime.
  • Odor That Stands Out: Coolant tends to have a sweet smell. When you drive or come out of parking, if you smell this, it means there is likely leaking coolant.
  • Steam Issues: As you drive, if steam suddenly appears from under the hood, it’s a very likely indication that water is leaking onto hot engine parts. Save time and safety by pulling over and switch the car off right away. This will keep the engine and cooling system from getting hurt.
  • Dashboard Warning: Most newer cars have devices that can tell when the coolant level is low. If the check engine light is illuminated, there may be a leak in the water.
  • Temperature of the Engine: When the dashboard temperature gauge shows that the engine is running hot, that means there isn’t enough coolant moving through it. Stop the car, turn it off, and wait a while before you drive again.

Why Do Coolant Leaks Happen?

Coolant leaks occur from either the outside or the inside of the car. Drivers should know the different reasons why each type of leak happens.

  • External Coolant Leaks: Radiator lines can get tears and holes as time passes.
  • Weak spots on the lines can let water leak out.
  • Leaks can happen if the coolant reservoir cracks or gets broken.
  • If there isn’t enough cooling fluid in the vehicle means the engine can get too hot, which can cause leaks and more pressure.

Leaks inside the engine:

  • Blown head gaskets are significant problems leading to oil and coolant mixing.
  • Radiators can become rusty and cause leaks.
  • It can lead to leaks if the radiator cap cannot do its job because it’s broken or worn down.
  • A leak can happen if the cap or the water pump itself breaks.
  • Leaks can happen if the expansion tank has cracks or other damage.
